The 2017 Red Ribbon Ride is in the Books!
On Sunday, July 16, the 2017 Red Ribbon Ride came to a successful close! On this 15th edition of the Ride (and my 7th), I was able to complete the nearly 300-mile journey over four days through the bluffs of southern Minnesota. In fact, every one of my teammates on Team Clare Housing was able to successfully complete the Ride ... It was an INCREDIBLE experience!!
Both Day 1 and Day 2 saw unusually cool temperatures for mid-July in Minnesota. In fact, it was so cool on Day 1 that I did not stop at the Dairy Queen in Lake City at the end of the 84+ mile trek ... it was NOT ice cream weather! I must say that I was not complaining about the cool weather, but a little sun would have been nice. And then there were those HLLS on Day 2 ... Climbing out of Lake City and moving toward Rochester was no joke! There were moments along that 82+ mile day that I felt defeated, and tears were shed. BUT in the end, I made it through with lots of encouragement from the community of friends around me!
On Day 3, between Rochester and Northfield, I found my joy!! The sun was out and the landscape flattened just a bit, and it was a glorious 71+ mile day :) For some, the wind and sun was a downer, but for me it was a really good day. You see, it was Day 3 last year that the storms hit, and I was held up in a barn for hours before being "swept" to lunch. I had never missed a single leg of the Ride until last year, and I must admit that bothered me. So, being able to complete this leg was extra meaningful this year!
And then on Day 4, from Northfield back home to the Capital in St. Paul (a mere 46+ miles), it was like a victory lap! I joined my teammates at Pit 1, and we rode in together ... all the way to the finish! Team Clare Housing was GREAT!!!
I know there are a few matching gifts still out there, but I am overjoyed to report that 177 generous people have donated $10,277 on my behalf toward the Ride. These numbers are incredible -- both go beyond my wildest hopes and expectations -- and I could not be more thankful!
The fight to end HIV and the stigma that comes along with it is still with us. And while we celebrate the successes of the 2017 Red Ribbon Ride, we must not let our guard down and pretend that the struggle is over. If you'd like to be a part of this cause, please make a tax-deductible donation to help. You can do so by clicking on "Make a gift to J.B. Mayo-Moschkau" on this page. You even have the option of spreading your donation out over time (enter monthly gift amount only, not the total).
Thank you all so much for the support. And to anyone visiting this page for the first time, I invite you to be an advocate with me in this effort to support people living with HIV, and to eventually find a cure. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of so many Minnesotans impacted by HIV/AIDS. Remember, no gift is too small and ALL are deeply appreciated!
