I'm Riding to Make a Difference
From July 20 - 22, 2018 I will be participating in the Red Ribbon Ride. Red Ribbon Ride 2018 is a 2-day bicycle ride that raises vital funds for five HIV/AIDS service organizations in Minnesota; providing HIV treatment, prevention and awareness.
I need your help to reach my goal. I hope I can count on you to support me on my journey of hope for thousands of Minnesotans with HIV/AIDS and those at risk of infection.
I decided to participate in the Red Ribbon Ride once previously, in 2014, about 3 weeks before kickoff, with barely any training, and a very heavy vintage bike! Unfortunately, I was only able to do so much due to an injury on the first day. This time around, I’ve got a new bike, been training like a madman since Spring, and am looking forward to successfully completing this exciting personal athletic challenge.
But the Red Ribbon Ride is more than a physical challenge for me. Its mission – to raise money for HIV/AIDS service organizations in Minnesota – is one I’m personally affected by. HIV-Positive since 2006, I am proud to help eliminate stigma through a positive public example. Dealing with being HIV-positive wasn’t always easy and even today has its ups and downs. Shame, disclosure, ignorance, addiction, noncompliance – these are just some of the issues that an HIV-positive individual may have to deal with. Thankfully, the medications today make HIV a largely manageable disease for those with the knowledge, resources, and accountability required to maintain regular adherence. It’s for these reasons, and for the many friends in my community, that I ride. Please support me on this journey.
Over the next month I plan to update this page frequently so you can follow my progress, so please visit often. While you're here, spend some time on the site to find out more about why this event is so important, and learn about the people who will benefit from the money we raise.
Thank you for your support!
My Personal Web Log
Less than 2 weeks to go: Training is in full swing.
After taking a break from spinning/riding for nearly 10 days while traveling to NYC and Vermont, my training is back in full swing.
I successfully completed my longest ever ride yesterday, riding 40 miles out 40 miles back from Minneapolis to Scandia, MN. It was a great training ride in nearly 90-degree heat with a few fellow Red Ribbon Riders.
As some of you know, I attempted the Red Ribbon Ride 4 years ago. After barely training at all, I hopped on my heavy vintage too small for me bike, and only completed about 60 miles of 80 on the first day due to knee issues. Unfortunately, I had to shorten the remainder of the ride because of those issues. This year, to do an 80 mile ride 2 weeks out from the main event without any major issues or injuries gives me a huge boost of confidence!
I did a spin class at the gym today to replicate some of the experience of doing rides on 2 consecutive days. A few more spin classes this week, and a 65-mile ride this coming weekend, and I hope to be in top-notch shape and ready to meet the challenge of the Ride.
Thank you so much to those that have donated already! You guys are the true heroes.
